Emerge VISA Card Company
I recently had a credit card account sold out from under me - if you have a VISA or MasterCard in the USA, you've probably had it happen to you at one time or another. The account was with Fleetbank (which has since become Bank of America), and they sold it to First National Bank of Omaha, which administers it under the name "Emerge." They should call it "Complete Craphead National Bank" instead, is what I think.
So I get this letter in the mail with a new credit card inside, a letter, and a phone number to call to 'activate' my new card. This has happened to your Wigster before, so that's not a big deal. Usually, you call the number, punch in some personal data, and then get transferred to a bored, gum-popping teenager who tries to get you to buy additional services that no one needs or really wants. You say no, no, no, and eventually they stop reading from the script, tell you your card is activated, and hang up on you.
Not this time. I called, punched in the information it asked for, and then was transferred. But this time, it was to a person who barely spoke any English. I mean like nearly none. She asked me for my birthday more than six times. She could not even understand the word "July" for my birth month. She kept repeating "June? June? April?" I have no idea what she meant. Maybe she thought July was an icky month to have a birthday and she wanted me to change my birthday. Not that bad an idea, but not really in my control.
I finally gave up. I figured I'd call in the morning, during business hours, and get someone who could speak English or who could at least transfer me to someone who spoke English. I was going to complain about my personal financial data ending up in some foreign country without my permission, but frankly, it would be like hollering at my dogs. It lets me blow off steam, but the dogs just cock their heads and me and bark from time to time, as if to see if they can actually get me to explode and shower them with bacon bits.
I am a very optimistic person, as it turns out. My head did explode, but it is not filled with bacon bits. Ah, rue the day, rue the day.
So, today, like a complete moron, I called the customer service number. Let me give you that number. 1-888-233-9538. That's the number for "Emerge" VISA and MasterCard customer service. Go ahead, give 'em a call. I'll wait.
Are you back? You may have noticed that the recording is scratchy and hard to understand. That's the best it ever gets. Really. The first thing it asks you is to put in your Social Security Number and press the # sign. So you do. And it grinds for awhile and then tells you that it can't find your account. So you are prompted to put in your VISA account number and press #, which you do. Then it asks you for your Social Security Number again. You enter it and this time, it recognizes you. You know how I know I didn't just mistype my SSN the first time? Because I've been through this menu more than twenty times today, that's why. It is broken the same way each time, so it ain't me.
Then, you listen to a scratchy, hard-to-understand voice message and you eventually get to the point and press "9" for a customer service rep. Then you go on hold.
For about 15 minutes. Never less than 5, sometimes more than 20. Not even nice music on hold, sadly. Nothing you can hum to.
Finally, you get through. To whom? To the same people who don't speak English that you could NOT communicate with the night before.
I went though all this, folks. I finally succeeded in getting my card activated. Then I made a huge mistake.
I asked my interest rate.
Oh, don't ever ask that. God help you if you do. Because they don't know what your interest rate is. They don't have access to it. They say you have to call the customer service number to get that information. You know, the one you already called. The one you dialed to speak to this happy numbskull. You try to explain this to them. All they can do is apologize but unfortunately, you have to dial the customer service number - they recite the number again, like you're a child and don't understand. You tell them again - YES, I UNDERSTAND. THAT'S THE NUMBER I DIALED TO SPEAK TO YOU. Then you recycle and go through this pattern until you get tired of it.
I never got the information. They have NO IDEA what my interest rate might be. Or they don't want to tell me what it is. You decide.
Several times through the loop, I threw a change-up pitch. I asked to speak to a supervisor. You know what that gets you? An introduction to Mister Click and Mister Dial-Tone, that's what. Or, you can ask THEM to transfer you to this mythical 'Customer Service' number that no one can actually dial. That's entertaining, because then you get put on hold for another twenty minutes before THEY ANSWER THE PHONE AGAIN. Yeah, the same guy. Or gal. And they pretend they don't recognize you from before. You have to give your bona fides again, and listen to them explain to stupid ol' you how you have to DIAL THE CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER if you want to talk to customer service.
I finally called the one number that was different from the others. It is the number they give you to dial if you don't want to accept their terms and you wish to close the account. I called it. The same Customer Service person ("Roxanna Samuel" to be precise) answered. I ignored the obvious and just told her I wanted to close my account. She took my bona fides for like the fifth time today and asked me WHY I was closing it.
"Because you cannot speak English."
"What?"
"Because you cannot speak English. That's why I'm closing my account."
"Spanish?"
"English."
"What?"
"I am closing my account because you do not speak English."
"I...am...closing..." (she says, as she types it into her computer terminal)... then she twigs that I am talking about HER. Duh.
"Sir, I speak perfect English."
"No, you don't."
"Yes, I do, and Spanish too."
"Well, then I'm closing my account because you are too short."
"What?"
"The bluebird only flies backwards at night."
"What?"
"Precisely."
"Sir, I need to know why you are closing your account."
"Exactly right."
"What?"
"That's why."
"What?"
I could go on, but it is all too painful. For you as well as me, I'm guessing. Sorry, I had to vent. I finally told her I was closing my account because I hate Mondays and let it go at that. I doubt she got the Bob Geldof reference, but there you go.
So here's the deal. Save yourself some grief. Don't do bidness with Emerge VISA card company or First National Bank of Omaha. Well, unless you speak Spanish and are really tall. Or own bluebirds. Something like that.
Smooches,
Wiggy

I suspect that I may secretly be a very cruel person because...I laughed at your plight. Maybe it's because misery loves company. I think I've met the same person over the phone that you did --- only she worked for the insurance company that we no longer do business with.

Feel free to laugh. I post in order to let the misery go. And go, and go, and go...

Well Wigwam - I've got you beat. I saw what they changed my percentage to over double what it was. I called to decline their services - and guess what - they didn't understand me - said they closed it - called to confirm, yeah right - I went through the same process two times on june 6th, then they told me to wait for the confirmation I called on june 8th still not done - asked for a supervisor wasn't allowed to speak to one. Closed it again called on the 9th to confirm - NOT DONE. Called again today the 10th - they tried to convince me to keep it because of the 'GOOD SERVICES" they couldn't understand what I wanted - closed it again (I think). Forwarded a letter "certified" - threaten them with a lawsuit - didn't undertand that. filed a complaint with the better business bureau - waiting on their reply. Oh and like a FOOL! called to try to confirm that it was closed, they said yes your fleet card is closed you now have an account with us. read them their "LETTER" I may as well have been reading the comics to them - got asked so what do you want - I didn't know so many foriegners were associated with a bank in Omaha. God help my credit and security of my personal information that these morons have access to.
Fri Jun 10, 07:16:00 PM EDT
I can only hope that my account was indeed closed. I haven't seen a single piece of paper from them with the exception of the new card and form letter. I have one advantage - I know where Bank of Omaha is located and I *will* go there and raise hell in person if there is a problem. These miserable screw-heads do NOT want that to happen.
Good luck with yours, sounds like a worse nightmare than mine. Eek!

That is lovely. I applaud your sticking it back to the credit card companies, which I learned long ago, are evil.

Wigwam,
Interesting stuff....I have had the same trouble with Emerge. Bank of Omaha negates any relationship with Emerge. They say Emerge uses the first 6 #'s of their credit accounts, legally, thus calling themselves FNBO. I did a search (the 2nd page gave better results), & came up with the parent company of Emerge. They are CompuCredit. Their address is 245 Perimeter Center Parkway, Suite 600, Atlanta, GA 30346. 1-888-522-2278. Get excited...I spoke with an American...She gave me a # for Aspire Visa 1-800-348-8783 and guess what? I put in my account info & wallah! I got a human, although she was in India somewhere. They SAY they are updating their system, which is why none of our credit card info registers correctly, today, June 13,2005. AND why there are No HUMANS available to help us access customer services.

This company is awful. I can't tell you how many problems I have had with them. Between their phony late fees and their hellishly high interest rates they will destroy your credit. They killed mine. Get out from under them however you can. Take out a consolidation loan if you gotta, but GET OUT!

Using your blog to fight evil... now that is a high calling, Wigy.
I eagerly await the results of your experiment here.

i CALLED TO CANCEL MY ACCOUNT AND i NEVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEPAK TO A HUMAN. i MUST HAVE ENTERED THAT 16 DIGIT ACCOUNT NUMBER 20 TIMES.FINALLY I WROTE THEM A LETTER WITH THE CREDIT CARD CUT UP TINO 6 PIECES. HOLD ON TO YOUR HAT !!!!!!! THEY SENT ME A REPLACMENT CARD STATING THAT MY ACCOUNT CAN NOT BE CLOSED IN THIS MANNER. THE LETTER DOES NOT STATE WHAT THEIR PROCEDURE IS TO CLSOE OUT AN ACCOUNT.
Fri Jul 01, 09:17:00 PM EDT
When I found out they were associated with Aspire Visa I almost fainted, That company is the world's worse. They don't send statements, and expect you to pay by quess and by golly. Emerge also forgot to send a statement the creeps, but I paid them anyway. I don't wish any bad luck on Fleet, but I hope the blue bird of happiness craps all over the ranking powers birthday cake. Can't wait for my statement, to see the outrageous interest rate so I can close the blasted thing. I HATE ASPIRE!!! and looks like I shall hate emerge also/

Jeeeeeezzzzz! Now I'm scared! I was just getting ready to set up an online account to pay my bill thru....and saw all these complaints on the search page. I read their eula...and then IT scared me.

Now....does that mean they are not responsible if their site gets hacked and your information is stolen? And why the heck are you having to speak to India to get customer service??
I'm glad I did some reading first. Wigwam...how did you go thru all that without blowing your brains out? I would have freaked.
But thank you for sharing that story and I will NOT be setting up an online account. I may not be able to pay my account off right now and close it....but I will not be using this card anymore.
Thanks to all of you for your comments. Patricia

Oh...and one more thing....when I was notified of the change....I wasn't sure where to send my payment. The only address I could find was the one in Atlanta, GA. So I sent my payment there with my fleet bill. Now on my new statement, it shows a $35.00 late fee on the 20th of June....and then on the 21st of June, it says: missing WU payment Atlanta, GA with my payment credit. My payment would have reached them by the due date of the 17th if I had known where to send it! I found another nightmare site about them. Has anyone heard from the BBB? My head hurts. : ) Patricia
Tue Jul 05, 11:15:00 PM EDT
Just one more thing! I copied this from another site.....Patricia
We never received any information about them changing owbership, and as a result, we ended up overextending our Credit Limit.
We are now being charged an Astrnomical 29.99% Interest Rate, plus all the late fees, since they cause our limit to be over extended.
We tried to resolve this problem by offering to pay what we felt was due, but they would not hear of it.
Our balance was $200.00 two years ago, when they changed to Emerge, and is now up to $1200.00 as a result of the penalty fees, and interest rates.
After some research, I finally found someone who would listen, and was interested in investigating this Company.
You may, or may not know that the Company has been sold to Aspire now.
Because Aspire is owned by Columbus Bank & Trust, they are FDIC Regulated. I URGE EVERYONE WHO READS THIS, AND HAS EXPERIENCED THE SAME THING, TO CONTACT THEM, AND FILE A REPORT!!!!!
Thier phone # is 877)275-3342.
They will also require a detailed explanation of what happened to you. You can FAX that information at 816)234-9060.
They also have a Web Page, where you can contact them, and submit a complaint. FDIC.Gov
Once you get to their Web Page click on the Contact Us, then go to Customer Assistance.
I was told that if they get enough complaints, that it may warrant a Class Action Lawsuit against them!
I was also told to contact the Attorney General Consumer Protection Devision, to find out if my State Regulates interest rates, as they said that the 29.99% Interest rate they are charging was "OUTRAGEOUS!"
Please take the time to Contact these Agencies!
LET'S NOT LET THESE CROOKS GET AWAY WITH THIS!!!

I received a post card today from EMERGE VISA saying that I had a balance of $60.00 and past due of $20.00. I looked at the account number and realized I did not have a credit card with that number. I called they nuber on the card 1-866-290-2830 and spoke to a persont that spoke english!! When I explained that I thought they had me mixed up with someone else because I did not have a credit card with that number.
She went on to say they my Fleet card had been sold to BOA etc. I said how can I have a balance when I paid the card off in 2004 and I have not used the card.
She then explained that I did not ask them to CANCEL my card and I was charged a $25.00 yearly fee even if I paid it off and no longer use it. I said well why am I being charged $60.00. "Oh, because you did not pay the $25.00 membership fee in June." I then said, "Well, I have not received any thing from you or Fleet." Please check your records. She said, "Oh, I see that we sent you something and it was returend to us."
I then asked how can I pay something I have not received?
To make a long stroy short "Beth" finally offered to cancel my card and waive the charges. So I now owe then nothing.
HOwever, I asked her for a letter stating that I owe them nothing and my card is cancled.
She then suggested that I call back in 4 days to make sure that it was cancled and no new charges were credited to my account.

Thank you so much for saving me the headache of dealing with these people. After reading this web site, I picked up the phone and called Emerge to cancel my newly acquired card. It WAS interesting that the foreign lady on the phone wanted to know WHY I was cancelling, to which I replied, "I'm cancelling because I WANT to, and it's not your place to ask me why - your job is to say I'll be happy to cancel your card." She got wrapped right around that, cancelled my card and assured me a letter would arrive in 4-7 days to confirm the cancellation. My paperwork is now in my "HOLD" file awaiting the possibility of that letter!
Thank you again...this could have been a really big mess!

Funny, I just closed my account - it took them almost a month to cash my 9K check to pump up the late fees, finally when the cash the check - their recording stated that I still owed them - when I faxed them the cancelled check - then they updated my account to reflect the payment- oh yeah, I told them I wasn't going to pay the late fees, that it was YOUR error - they place me on hold for 5 minutes, just to inform me - WE are WAIVING the fees.

We've been having problems with these clowns too. Here's the info I got from FNOB:
Thank you for your recent inquiry. All Emerge account related inquiries and
servicing is being done by CompuCredit.
Please contact them at 1-888-233-9538 or www.emergecard.com for further
assistance.
First National Bank of Omaha is considered the 'bank of record' with
Visa/Mastercard, which is why our name appears on various documents and credit
bureau information.

God, Thank you all for your advice. This week I recently paid off my entire account. Emerge had raised my interest to 30.99%. When I set up my online payment the customer service was great. However, once I went to check on its status it went down hill. Thank you for having the Atlanta number online. The regular customer service number kicked me out of the system. I'll let you know in "7-10 working days" after I receive my closing letter.
Sat Aug 06, 07:44:00 PM EDT
well, I am sitting on hold with Emerge, waiting to try to figure out what the heck they are doing with my interest rates, they apparently don't know, I am speaking with person number 3 and still not sure if they speak english right now they are "reviewing my acct to see how they need to assist me" what a joke! This is the 3rd company to buy out this account and my stress level has reached new levels trying to deal with them. I have been on the phne an hour anda half and the movie I puton for my kids to watch while I deal with this phone call is ending. I was glad to read some of the prvious comments. DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE IF YOU CAN HELP IT. I am doing what I can to pay this and be done with them.

Holy Cow! I just read all this stuff because I couldn't get through the service number and I'd just received a postcard from Emerge stating that I was Past Due and now owe these creeps $69.05. I never even used the card and received no statements in the mail. I'd just switched over from Fleet blithely thinking of blue skies and daisys. Thanks for your post everyone...I'm gonna clear up this little debacle an get out of Dodge.

I am applying for a line of credit against my home which has no mortage, no leins, no nothing. I knew my rating wasn't the best after my dad died and took a year off work to take care of my mom, Within three months of my dads death my livein girlfriend of 5 years got breast cancer and was severly burned by radiation, So I was very busy that year taking care or two important people in my life. So here almost 5 years later after my mom passed I applied through Leanding Tree for a loan and choose Premeir Bank. I wanted to finish fixing up the house and sell it and move to a place where there is no snow. They said I had to pay nothing on old debt that I could take care of that myself. Then just before closing I find out they want me to pay off the several accounts that were in collection... no problem I thought.
Then come this Circut City Card that belonged to FNANB then Fleet, then to BOA and now FNBO/Emerge. In 4 days I spent at least 25 hours on the phone trying to get this fixed. Here is the kicker. My girlfriend, while trying to find where the account went called BOA to open a new card just to talk to someone live and gave them the card number they said was in collection. BOA said it was an active card under a different name. They would not fax me that statement. Sent me to FNBO. FNBO can't match up my ss and the account number. I then called Visa International to find who has the card. They say FNBO then Emerge. I asked for a fax stating this. They want me to send in a complaint via US Postal. I had Visa Internatonal do a confrence call with Emerge who says there is no such account and neither Institution will fax me anything. Remeber I have a loan waiting to close and this is sunday and if I don't close the loan tomorrow I may lose it. My loan consultant at Premier hasn't made the calls. I can't get anything resolved with Emerge and Visa International (410-902-8011)just doesn't care saying its not their problem. The reason for calling Visa Internationa was to find where the card was since they track where all their cards go, or who they have been sold to, or so they would like to think. I plan on bringing suits against VI, Emerge, FNBO And like all the stories about calling these people I wish my calls were that easy. Needless to say I will never hold a Visa account again. I found a local credit union who uses MC and will do all my business with them. This way when or if I need to get a peoblem fixed I can talk to someone who knows the difference between the letter c and z or the number 1 and 5. Totally unreal what I have gone through this week. I have moved away from as many of the big business companies I can, cable/internet connection, land line, anything I can move away from, all because their costumer service has been sent overseas and has gone into the crapper. I even forwarded this site to my loan officer who may see this post monday. I sent the numbers of VI, Emerge and FNBO so he can call them to hear for himself there is no such account that matches my SS#
And one last thing I was surprised to see that someone from which I assume was from FNBO acutally posted about Emerge. Think she still has a job?

You all are sooo correct. I just called to get the mailing address, and it's just something nonlegit, or seems anyway, about this company. I felt uncomfortable entering and giving info. The operator sound really unexperienced. It took forever just for her to give me the mailing address. I think i'm going to pay off this card in a hurry...

they are totally sketchy... i work for a credit repair company and we are constantly writing letters to emerge and FNBO because they have no clue as to what they are doing... it's amazing. i would never ever do business with them... they seem awful.

Wiggy, It's happening to me right now, I've wasted over 2 hours just trying to get my statements sent (I haven't recieved one in 3 months). So I have to keep making payments by phone WHICH they charge me $14.99 to do. Can you imagine?? The nerve!! No one seems to understand english and I surely can't understand them. They also doubled my intrest rate from what I had with Fleet. I'm so frustrated!!! Thanks for listening! Terry

Ahhhhh kindred soul, I have found you. We are so much alike in thought and process, all I can say is ditto...ditto, and ditto.
There was one slight variation, I believe I uterred "The eagle flies at night" to my customer service rep, if you can even call them that. But I also like your use of the bluebird. Now I'm going to have to try the height option. Or maybe I'll use that they have the wrong tone of voice. Even if they never understand, it will humor me some.

I got a letter day before yesterday...saying I was over the limit(I don't know how I could be), and my account closed. I called them. They said they are closing all cards out. I don't know why, but sounds like they are going under. If there is a class action lawsuit..I want to join. I knew they have outrageous interest rates. I didn't know they charge $150.00 a year to have the card. Right now, I just don't know what to do.

Well, if you call the automated system to get your balance and etc. did you know they somehow trap your number you are calling from and use it to call you when you are past due even a minute late rather it be yur cell phone or your employment, they did that to me and it was embassarring as I have a co-worker who sits right infront of me and then my manager came in. They called my cell phone 1st and I told them they can not do that it is illegal and they called right back on my work phone number at my extension and that blew my mind. I filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commisson and the Atlanta BBB, which according to somone acting on behalf of Emerge said it was captured in the notes when I called, NOT, I did not talk to a human. Have e-mailed a whole lot of times to Compucredit, never had a response and also to Emerge from their own Web page, not a site like everyone else has said and it keeps coming back unable to deliver and I even tried the e-mail to the letter that this person told BBB ther is no reason I cannot get a hold of them by e-mail, YEP I did. I have kept every attempt everything I have tried and I will not call them because I will not talk to someone from I India again, they have called me 4-6 times a day as already stated by others 7 days a week day and night and it all stem because they agreed that I could pay half o fmy payment as I was attacked by a dog pretty bad, off work for 3-weeks and of course got behind in bills and from then on it was constant calling seeing when I could pay the other half, most of the payment was interst and fees anyway and nothing to the purchases. I will not pay them a dime more till I know who these people are as I have even gotten so called letters from different states.Emerge letter is a joke, a 5 year old could to that on a computer, and that is when I started to wonder who are these people, Emerge and Compucredit and then I started reading up on the complaints on both and WOW, we need to stop these people whoever they are. They do not have the right to call my work or my cell phone without my permission and then LIE on how that got both numbers, I have declined to be od with their explanation to the BBB twice now and this last time I guess they have not responded back th the BBB as I want the truth on how they got both numbers to to call me.

Today was the Day. I attempted to close this account on Friday via the Interrnet and there 4.95 dollar charge. (I recently got fed up with there shutting off my charge priveldges in the middle of a vacation) So I checked through out the weekend and no pay off and no closing of the account. Today I call that Scratchy number and start my Blue Jay, Too short thing. I paid it off on Friday but am assuming since they bilked me out of the weekend that additional interest at 21 percent is pending. This is the worst company to deal with ever. If you are reading this for the first time do not use Emerge for anything. I will repost and let you know how the closed account thing goes...
